Apply
To complete the application online, Apply for Licensing here (application forms can also be downloaded and mailed or faxed.) Submit the completed form, along with the application fee. The fee will vary, depending on whether or not you are an AWI member. View the Fee Schedule for application fee details. On the application, you will be asked which QCP licenses you will be seeking. See the Standardized Minimum Sample Criteria for QCP Licensing (MSC) found under Resources for a complete list of licenses offered for fabrication, finishing, and installation.
Take the Test
Complete and pass a 75-question, multiple-choice, open-book test on the latest edition of the Standards, as well as a 50-question, multiple-choice, open-book test on the latest edition of the QCP Policies.
Submit 10 Trade References
References must include a minimum of two from general contractors, two from design professionals, and two from project owners. If your business model or market makes this exact combination impossible, QCP will explore whether an alternate combination is acceptable.
Complete Sample Shop Drawings
Shop Drawings illustrating samples corresponding to the QCP licenses sought by your company must conform to the AWI Standards or Architectural Woodwork Standards. See the Standardized Minimum Sample Criteria for QCP Licensing (MSC) under Resources for complete requirements.
Licensing Inspection
Upon completion of the above steps and fabrication of the required work samples, a QCP representative will contact you to arrange a visit to your facility. S/he will assess the licensing samples your company has fabricated per the Minimum Sample Criteria (MSC), and visit two projects completed within the previous two years. Those projects are inspected for general workmanship (not strict compliance with AWI Standards) and to verify that your company transacts business with the public (see the “Eligibility Guidelines” on this page). However, if the installation for one or both projects was performed by employees of your company and you are applying for installation licensing, these two projects typically serve as the necessary samples. Discuss installation samples with your assigned QCP representative prior to his/her visit to ensure that the installation meets the sample criteria. The inspector will issue a report detailing his/her findings, including those related to conformance of work samples with the AWI Standards or Architectural Woodwork Standards. If the one year application period allowed for completion of licensing has not elapsed, your company can provide any necessary corrections or omitted items, and QCP will assess whether all issues have been resolved.
